How I Use AI to Actually Manage My FPL Team

Last time I got an LLM to pick my FPL team and it looked plausible. But it was also completely illegal.

It hallucinated players who no longer play in the Premier League, tried to cram five Arsenal players into one squad and blew the budget.

This post is my pipeline to fix that - using real FPL data, explicit constraints and a validator that ensures the generated team meets the rules.

The Architecture at a Glance

FPL Agent Architecture: Data Fetcher → Processor → Data Store → Prompt Builder → LLM Inference → Validator → State Update → Output

Data Fetcher - Pulls raw player and fixture data from the FPL API.
Processor - Cleans and standardises data into a usable format.
Data Store - Persists the player data for reuse.
Prompt Builder - Assembles constraints and players into a structured prompt for building a team or gameweek updates.
LLM Inference - Sends the prompt to the model and receives structured JSON.
Validator - Enforces game constraints, including budget, formation and club limits.
State Update - Recalculates team cost, transfers and bank, and then saves the new team state.
Output - Stores the result and displays the team.

Breaking It Down

Data Fetcher

The core problem in the single prompt approach was not that the model was dumb (it's not), but that it was largely guessing and trying to fit a pattern.

The model doesn't know current prices, who was injured this week or which gameweek it currently is. It just tries to produce something that sounds right. So the first design decision is simple, to give it a helping hand and try and eliminate guesswork.

Luckily there is an official FPL API, which means there is easy access to a reliable source of data.

To interact with this I wrote an FPLDataFetcher class that pulls relevant data directly from the API.

The API contains two key endpoints that I use to power the system:

bootstrap-static - gives me access to the full player universe, teams and gameweeks. Most importantly this includes every player, their pricing information and their gameweek performance.
fixtures - gives me the fixture data, covering the upcoming gameweeks and the teams playing.

If I give the relevant parts of this to the model, instead of just asking it to build a team and hoping it can figure it out, I can get a much more reliable result. I'm now guiding it with the latest, most up-to-date information.

Technically, this is a very basic form of retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), where I'm giving the model the latest information to help it make a decision. Although I wouldn't say it was sophisticated yet, but it's a start. More on this later.

Processor

The data fetcher is great, but it returns a raw JSON blob in a format that's not particularly useful for the model. I need to clean it up and standardise it into a format that the model can understand. This is where the DataProcessor comes in.

The DataProcessor takes the FPL API data and cleans it up into a format that I can store and easily reuse. You'll notice in the FPL API response that there is lots of data that may not be relevant and quite a bit that doesn't make sense. For instance, the team and element_type fields are just IDs that don't make sense at the moment.

The DataProcessor interprets these and does the following:

Normalises player records.
Maps element_type to positions - GK, DEF, MID, FWD.
Joins player records to team names.
Extracts availability signals - status, chance_of_playing.
Drops some irrelevant fields.

You can clearly see I've added position, team name and the player's full name to the data, along with a number of other small formatting tweaks.

Data Store

Now I've fetched and processed the latest player data, I need somewhere to persist it for reuse later. This is where the DataStore comes in.

The DataStore is intentionally simple. It writes the processed data to two JSON files - one for player data and one for fixture data. No databases, nothing complex, just simple and effective.

Each time I prompt the model, I fetch fresh data, process it and overwrite the store. This guarantees the model always reasons over the latest information.

Prompt Builder

Now I have all the data I need, I can engineer a prompt that the model can use to build a team. This is the job of the PromptFormatter.

There are two distinct scenarios I need to handle:

Building a team from scratch - gameweek 1, wildcard, free hit.
Updating an existing team for a new gameweek.

They share data, but they are fundamentally different optimisation problems. One is construction. The other is constrained modification.

1. The Constraints

As I've shown so far, meeting the constraints is critical to ensuring a valid team. I can't just expect the model to know the rules of the game and therefore I write these directly into the prompt.

   * The squad must include exactly 15 players:
     * 2 goalkeepers, 5 defenders, 5 midfielders, 3 forwards
   * The starting 11 must follow valid FPL formations:
     * 1 goalkeeper, 3-5 defenders, 2-5 midfielders, 1-3 forwards

These are generated by format_team_constraints. This removes ambiguity and attempts to constrain the model to the rules of the game. I also define some of the typical constraints in each prompt too, for example transfer rules.

2. The Fixtures

Next, I provide short-term context.

Fixtures are grouped by date using format_fixtures. This matters for captaincy, benching decisions and short-term transfers. Without fixtures, the model is blind to the upcoming gameweek.

3. The Players

This is the selection of players to choose from.

Each player is formatted cleanly:

Players with Availability = 0% are filtered out. This is important. The model does not necessarily understand availability flags. If I leave injured players in the pool, it may well happily select them.

4. The Current Team

When updating a squad, the model must reason over its current state.

I provide:

Sale price and purchase price
Current budget and bank
Free transfers available
Available chips

The difference between sale and purchase price is critical. FPL applies a 50% sell-on fee to price rises, so the model cannot assume market price equals sale price.

This is important because we need a fixed structure for checking the team is valid.

Combining these together gives me a structured prompt for the model to build a team around.

LLM Inference

Once the prompt is ready, it's time to hand it over to the model.

I send each prompt to the model using OpenRouter's API. Initially, I tested directly with the Gemini API free tier, but then they changed the usage limits and I switched to using OpenRouter for everything.

The model then returns a structured JSON response containing the team - captain, vice captain, starting 11, substitutes, bank and any transfers. Using a schema ensures the output is predictable and easy to validate before updating the team.

Validator

Before we can use the team the model returns, we need to make sure it actually follows the FPL rules. This was a major problem in the naive prompt approach.

The validator checks things like:

Is the basic structure correct? (team exists, starting 11, substitutes, captain, vice-captain, etc.)
Squad size - exactly 15 players.
Position limits - 2 GK, 5 DEF, 5 MID and 3 FWD.
Club limits - no more than 3 players from the same club.
Budget - total cost ≤ £100m, bank ≥ £0.
Formation - the starting 11 has 1 GK and within allowed ranges for other positions.
Captain & vice captain - both present, different and in the squad.
Substitutes - 4 subs, including 1 GK.

If anything is off, the validator will catch it.

It also handles the nitty-gritty of parsing the model's JSON output. This includes stripping markdown code blocks, extracting JSON if it's wrapped in extra text and converting any error messages into proper failures. These were in response to challenges I encountered along the way.

State Update

Once we have a valid team from the model, we need to apply it to our stored state. That's what my TeamManager class handles.

Its main jobs are:

Budget calculation - for weekly updates, it figures out how much money is available and in the bank using FPL's sell-on rules.
Meta update - updates the bank, free transfers, chips used, current gameweek and keeps track of the latest team file.
Persistence - saves the new or updated team to JSON files so we can refer back to it later.

This step ensures that each time we update or build a team, the model knows exactly what is available and what the current squad looks like. I store each team's metadata in a JSON file.

Once we've validated and updated everything the team is complete and can be updated on the FPL website.

Giving It a Go

Now that the architecture is in place, let's see it in action. For this example, I used Grok 4 to build a team for Gameweek 26.

I ran this prompt through Grok 4 via the OpenRouter API with web search enabled (temperature=0.3, top_p=0.8, top_k=25, max_output_tokens=100,000). The goal here is not creativity. It's compliance. A lower temperature keeps it from improvising, a large output limit stops it from getting cut off mid-JSON, and the validator does the actual rule enforcement when the model returns its selected team.

And... it actually behaves. This team is budget-compliant, respects formation, stays under the three-player-per-club limit, and comes with reasons that are at least recognisably human. That alone puts it several tiers above the "single prompt and pray" approach.

It's not perfect. But it's valid, and it's using real FPL data rather than "pure vibes". That's the first threshold you have to cross before optimisation even matters.

What's Missing?

While the structured pipeline produces a valid, actionable team, there are still a few limitations:

No injury context: The model doesn't know the wider context of a player's injury, whether it's for one gameweek or the whole season. At the moment, I filter out players with 0% chance of playing, but a player may have a 25%, 50% or 75% chance of playing, and that nuance is important for decision-making to avoid picking players unlikely to play.
Limited player insights or news: Right now we only feed in player stats, which are harder for the model to reason over than language. Providing summarised expert advice, recent form notes or hints/tips can help the model make more informed decisions.
The prompt is very large: More specifically it's 51,308 tokens, which is actually too large for some models on OpenRouter to handle. Gemini 2.5 Pro for instance fails with this prompt via the OpenRouter API, since it exceeds the limit, returning
a request entity too large error. Not only is it failing a bad sign, but this is a sign it could overwhelm the model and make its life difficult. It would be better to trim down the player list to a more manageable size, instead of giving the model 600 or so players to choose from - there are many players here it will never need to consider.

Essentially, the model can reason over rules, budgets and basic stats, but it's missing the finer context that human managers often rely on to make optimal decisions. These gaps are exactly what I'll address next time.
